Just catching up on your posts....
Dark tales indeed of human folly and unkindness.

You are right about R. Rendell; her stand alones are deeply chilling and very
very English. I think The Tree of Hands was one of the best.

About to embark on Betty Miller. Growing up in England I never realised that many of my
parents' friend were Jewish. I think in the 50's assimilation and not talking about things was the way it went...

The girl sitting next to me on the El yesterday was Reading A Thousand Splendid Suns and I couldn't stop myself from telling her how much I loved that book. I find it so fun reading with other commuters :)

I especially like the last one.

Hi Elizabeth: Folly and unkindness, indeed . . . Looking forward to discussing Leicester Square this week.

Hello Short Story Slore: Thanks for sharing your sighting. I, too, love reading in public -- out in the world, but also IN the world of the book . . .

Hi Nan: Me too!!

Love this feature. Tempted to thieve for Metro watching here in DC. Memoirs of Hadrian in my reading future.

Hi Frances: Perhaps I should start franchising the idea. LOL!

Seen on MARTA in the ATL: Frumpish lady in her early 60's reading a very new glossy paperback of Mennonite in a Little Black Dress - by Rhoda Janzen.

Also seen on MARTA, 30something female having bad hair day, nodding off and occasionally snoring...oh wait, that was ME!

Hello Sheri: Nice sightings! But do tell: Where is "MARTA"?

MARTA - Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit System. AKA "the train."

Hi Sheri: AH!! Atlanta! The "M" had me thinking "Memphis" or "Minneapolis." Thanks for clarifying!
