Last Thursday evening a friend and I attended a patrons' holiday reception at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, featuring the lighting of the exquisite "Angel Tree," which is decorated with 18th-century Neapolitan figures of angels, and surrounded by an elaborate Neapolitan creche. Here are some photos of the tree (all photo credits, Metropolitan Museum of Art):

That is exquisite! It looks like a 3D version of one of those vast Renaissance paintings where you could look at it every day for a month and still find something new!

Love the tree! Seeing "Neapolitan" written reminds me of the time I got in trouble for misspelling it in grad school :)

Absolutely fabulous -- I love the angels, they are wonderfully artistic and so detailed.

Hi LizF: Viewing this tree is one of my favorite "Christmas in NY" things to do . . .
Hello Laura: Glad you liked the tree - "Neapolotan" or "Neopolitan," as the case may be. LOL!
Hi Coffee and a Book Chick: All of the figures, particularly in the creche, as well as the shepards and travelers depicted at the base of the tree, are really beautifully rendered. And the angels really do appear, well, angelic.

This looks lovely. We are hoping to get to the city on Saturday, but it is not definite yet.
